Lamcraft Recognizes Vastly Growing Hispanic Population

The Hispanic population is rapidly growing throughout the United States. Since 1980, the Hispanic community has grown from 14.6 million people, per the Census Bureau, to nearly 52 million as of 2011. Also, the Census Bureau is projecting that in 2060 there will be nearly 129 million Hispanics, which would constitute approximately 31 percent of the nation’s population by that date. California, Texas, and Florida are currently the states with the highest Hispanic population.

Along with the steadily growing Hispanic population come traditions and customs celebrated in their home countries. One popular celebration throughout Mexico and around the world is one of honoring the dead (Day of the Dead). Starting on October 31 and sometimes lasting between 1-3 days, groups gather to pray for and remember friends and family members who have passed. Plans for this special celebration are made throughout the year, gathering goods to be offered to the dead. During the three-day period families usually clean and decorate graves, along with cooking lots of food and taking part in celebrating their loved one’s life. Popular gifts laid on the graves include toys for children and tequila for the adults. A common symbol of the holiday is the skull, which is represented in masks, food, and shrines. The traditions and activities vary from town to town, but the idea of celebrating a deceased love one is universal.
